Extension Activities
i) Covid-19 Pandemic Assistance
When the COVID-19 pandemic spread globally, the world went into lockdown, causing widespread job losses and leaving many people struggling to meet their basic needs. Upon learning of the dire situation faced by the underprivileged, Rev. Fr. Director and the Executive Committee (EC) members decided to take action and offer their support. A total of ₹1,75,000 was raised through contributions from the EC members and alumni, specifically for COVID-19 relief efforts. These funds were used to provide rice bags and essential groceries to approximately 400 underprivileged families in the parish of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, helping them to cope with the immediate challenges brought on by the pandemic.
Additionally, the USA Chapter of the SJC Alumni Association generously contributed ₹4.00 lakhs to assist those severely affected by the second wave of the pandemic, which occurred between March and June 2021. This contribution was vital in supporting the most vulnerable communities during this difficult period. Moreover, 200 impoverished families from the adopted villages of the SHEPHERD Extension Department at St. Joseph’s College were identified and provided with financial assistance of ₹2,000 per family to help them navigate through the hardships they faced.
These efforts highlight the compassion and commitment of the SJC Alumni Association, the EC members, and the broader alumni community in coming together to provide much-needed relief to those most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
ii) FLOOD RELIEF SUPPORT
The SJC Alumni Association, under the leadership of Rev. Fr. Director and the Executive Committee (EC) members, has made a significant contribution to the ongoing flood relief efforts. A generous donation of ₹3,50,000 was provided through Rev. Dr. Pavulraj Michael SJ, Rector to support flood-affected areas, channeled through the Student Training and Action for Neighborhood Development (STAND) at St. Xavier College, Palayamkottai, on 3rd January 2023. This initiative is a part of the Alumni Association's commitment to offering timely aid to communities in distress.
In addition to the core leadership, various chapters of the SJC Alumni Association, including those based in the USA, Singapore, the Middle East, Bangalore, and Chennai, have also played a pivotal role in this humanitarian endeavor. Each chapter, along with the dedicated EC members, contributed generously to the relief fund, further demonstrating their shared responsibility and deep commitment to supporting those affected by the disaster.
